Michigan Ticket Claims Fifth-Largest $842.2 Million Powerball Jackpot

A meaningful New Year’s Day celebration unfolded as a single ticket sold in Michigan struck gold by matching all six numbers to seize the staggering $842.2 million Powerball jackpot. The win marks the Fifth-Largest $842.2 Million Powerball Jackpot ever secured in Powerball’s history.

According to Powerball, the fortunate individual heralding the new year as a millionaire has the choice of a lump sum payment totaling an estimated $425.2 million before tax deductions. The winning numbers drawn on Monday were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49, and the Powerball 1.

The jackpot escalated beyond its initial projection of $810 million due to robust ticket sales, positioning it as the tenth-largest lottery jackpot clinched in the United States, as per Powerball Largest $842.2 Million Powerball Jackpot.

“This historic win also signifies the inaugural instance of a Powerball jackpot being claimed on New Year’s Day since the game’s inception in 1992,” stated Powerball in a press release.

The winning ticket was vended at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc in the city of Grand Blanc, Michigan, as confirmed by the Michigan Lottery.

Remarkably, this triumph stands as the second-largest lottery jackpot ever secured in Michigan, trailing behind a $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot claimed in January 2021, according to the state’s lottery authorities.

The Powerball jackpot had been swelling over weeks with no grand prize winners until this monumental win on New Year’s Day.

Apart from the jackpot winner, multiple tickets matched the first five numbers, securing substantial prizes on Monday. Notably, tickets in California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland bagged $1 million each. Furthermore, two tickets, sold in Texas and Florida, clinched $2 million prizes due to their inclusion of the Power Play feature, as outlined on Powerball’s official website.

Expressing elation at the remarkable start to the New Year, Drew Svitko of Powerball commented, “What an incredible beginning to the New Year for Powerball! In addition to our big jackpot winner, there are hundreds of good causes supported by U.S. lotteries that will receive further funding from this jackpot run. Thank you to our players for making this possible! Happy New Year!”

The most recent jackpot win occurred on October 11 when a California ticket scored an astounding $1.76 billion. The ticket was vended at Midway Market & Liquor in Frazier Park, approximately 70 miles north of Los Angeles, based on information from the California Lottery.

As of now, no winner has stepped forward to claim the prize, and they have until October 11 of the following year to do so. In the event of no claimant, the funds will be allocated to California public schools, according to Carolyn Becker, spokesperson for the state lottery.

The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9, while the chances of clinching the jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million.
